比較級でも触れましたが、THE 比較級, THE 比較級は、接続詞 AS や、IF節 に置きかれられます。AS節やIF節の方が頻度は高いです。
As we get older, we become less flexible.
The older we get, the less flexible we become.
If you plan more carefully, you will have better result.
The more carefully you plan, the better result you will have.
NO 比較級 THAN の書換え
比較級でも触れましたが、NO 比較級 THANは、ONLY と書換えたり、NEITER A OR B で置き換えることができます。
I have no more than $100.
I have only $100.
It is no more than 2 miles.
It is only 2 miles.
A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
Neither a whale nor a horse is a fish.
Mimi is no more beautiful than her sister.
Neither Mimi nor her sister is beautiful.
MORE OR LESS
MORE OR LESS なんて、多いのか少ないのかよくわからないですね。程度の上下がわからない、つまり、「殆んど同程度」という意味で、ALMOST等に置き換えられます。
The ground was more or less flat.
The ground was alomost flat.
Her crazy plan worked, more or less.
Her crazy plan worked, mostly.
