比較級 - Comparative
比較級以外の比較表現
比較表現は、形容詞の比較級だけでなく、"superior" "preferable" 等の程度の差を表す形容詞や、"prefer" 等の動詞で表す事ができます。この場合、比較対象は【THAN】ではなく前置詞【TO】で導入されます。
I prefer tea to coffee.
I like tea more than coffee.
This new engine is superior to the old one.
This new engine is better than the old one.
PREFER が TO-不定詞をとる場合、比較対象は前置詞【TO】ではなく、RATHER THAN をとります。口語ではよく RATHER THA や 【THAN】以下の【TO】を省きます。
I prefer to stay home rather than to go shopping.
I prefer to stay home than go shopping. informal
比較級の慣用表現
THAN…THINK, EXPECT, USUAL
「思ったより〜だった」という表現は良く使いますね。英語では、think, expect などを使って表現します。
The pirce of the dress was less expensive than I thought.
Things will be better than you think.
There were more people there than I expected.
「いつもより」は、than usual で表します。
She woke up earlier than usual..
I slept more than usual today.
She looks more tired than usual.
比較級 and 比較級
比較級 AND 比較級 で、「どんどん」「益々」という意味になります。
The world becomes warmer and warmer every year.
The balloon flew higher and higher.
Soccer becomes more and more popular in the U.S.
THE＋比較級, THE＋比較級
THE＋比較級, THE＋比較級を小論文で何回か使ったら、「気取りすぎ。」と言われました。以来あまり使っていません。確かにあまりよく見る表現ではありません。
ただし、"The sooner, the better." は日常表現でよく聞きます。皆忙しいのですね。
Can you come to my office? The sooner, the better.
The longer you put it off, the harder you start to do it.
「〜をすればするほど、ますます〜だ」と言いたいけれど、気取っている印象を与えたくない…。そんな時は接続詞【AS】 や、【IF】 を使って表現します。
As we get older, we become less flexible.
The older we get, the less flexible we become.
If you plan more carefully, you will have better result.
The more carefully you plan, the better result you will have.
【AS】や 【IF】を使った表現は、THE＋比較級, THE＋比較級 よりも頻度が高いです。
