コロン(:) と セミコロン(;)
コロンとセミコロンは、コンマとピリオドの間に位置するような句読点です。
つまり、コンマだとダラダラ文が続いて読みにくいけれども、ピリオドみたいにピシッと文が切れているわけではないという感覚の時に使います。
例えば、リスト表示や例の表示をする時に使われるコロンの用法。ピリオドよりコロンの方が２つの文の関連性が強く表せます。
セミコロンは、コロンとコンマの間。AND, BUT, WHILEの代わりにセミコロンでつなげます。このセミコロン、英語の「文」の感覚がわからないと中々難しい句読点であり、文法書によって使用法も若干違う句読点です。
ここではあまり深入りせずに、一般的な用法を解説します。

文中でリスト表記する場合、Colon(:)で区切って明確にします。

リスト表示される内容が文の場合、大文字、ピリオド等のルールが適応されます。

文中の単語の詳細を説明する際、Colon(:)で区切ります。

AND や、SUCH AS 等で結んでいる文の多くは、Colon(:)で区切りやすい文です。Colon(:)自体あまり使われる句読点ではありませんがFOR EXAMPLE ばかり使っていて嫌になった時などに挿入してみると良いですよ。
長いQuotation(")の挿入文
Quotation(")の場合、通常Comma (,)を使いますが、一文以上の場合、Colon(:)で区切って明確にします。

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

二つの関連した文を一体化する場合
Semicolon(;)は、AND, BUT, WHILE等で接続できる二つの文を代わりにつなぎます。Semicolon(;)の後は必ず小文字です。

Semicolon(;)は、２つの文の関連性が強く、PERIOD (.)で区切るよりも、一文にした方が良い、という時に使います。
何の事？と感じる方も多いかもしれませんね。英文の1 thought, 1 sentenceの原則を理解していないと使いこなせない句読点、それがセミコロンです。また、参考書によって若干違いますから、自信がないうちはあまり使わない方が良いかもしれません。

リストにComma(,)を含む時
Colon (:)を使ったリストの項目を区切る際、Comma(,) と Semicolon(;) 組み合わせて使う場合があります。
Today's special at the restaurant are: jerk chicken, $5.00; oxtail stew, $6.00; and chicken curry, $5.00.
