副詞句:独立分詞構文 —Absolute Constructions
副詞句はあまり口語では使われませんが、独立分詞構文はよく使います。あまり難しく考えずに、意味から入っていくと良いですよ。主語を気にしなくて良いというのは、ある意味日本語感覚でいうと使いやすい表現です。
GENERALLY SPEAKING
「一般的に言って」「概して」という意味。似たようなパターンで、Frankly speaking「率直に言うと」、Strictly speaking「厳密に言うと」などもあります。
Generally speaking, diet is the most important key to losing weight.
Strictly speaking, this sentence is not grammatical.
TALKING OF
「〜と言えば」という意味。Speaking of と言う事もあります。
"Speaking of which" は、相手の話題を which で受けて「そう言えば〜」という感じで使います。
Talking of chocolate, Belgium is famous for chocolate in the world.
Speaking of which, I found a very nice Thai restaurant.
HAVING SAID THAT
Having said that, は「そうは言っても」「〜とは言ったものの」という意味。THATは前に言った事をさします。
同じ意味で That being said(With that being said) があります。Having said that の方が口語的、With that being said は書き言葉的です。
You must study harder to pass the exam. Having said that, it's also important to take a rest.
辞書に載っているのは「とは言ったものの」と、前言とは対照的な考え方を述べる時に使う表現のみですが、「〜というわけで」と、順接的に使うこともあります。
You must study harder to pass the exam. Having said that, here is your homework this week.
いづれにしても、前に述べたことを「ふまえて」話を続ける時に使います。
JUDGING FROM(BY)
judging from (by)は「〜から判断するに」という意味。
Judging from what you said, she must be very attractive.
Judging by the mess, the party must have been a good one.
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
all things considered （with all things considered) は「〜を全て考慮に入れると」「総合的に見て」という意味。
All things considered, the meeting was quite successful.
CONSIDERING 〜は「〜を考慮に入れると」という意味です。前置詞とみなされ、分詞ではないのですが、良く使われるので覚えておいて下さい。
Considering your condition, you did well on the exam.
ASSUMING
Assuming〜 は 「〜と仮定して」「〜だと思うが」という意味。これは接続詞とみなされるようです。
Assuming God is real, what would you ask?
Assuming you are serious, you should read those books to improve your writing skills.
PROVIDED
provided (that) 〜は「〜という条件付で」「〜する限り」という意味。これも接続詞とみなされるようです。
She is willing to drop the charge, provided that he signs the agreement.
口語ではあまり使われませんが、ビジネス文書や契約書でよく使われます。
