因果関係を表す副詞節 - Cause and Effect
NOW THAT
【NOW THAT】は、BECAUSE…NOW の意味で使います。通常文頭で用います。
Now that I am unemployed, I cannot afford such an expensive dress.
= Because I am unemployed now, I cannot afford such an expensive dress.
Now that the semester is over, we are going to relax a little.
NOWが示すとおり現在形しか使えません。「今」を強調したい時に使います。
SO THAT-節
SO THAT-節 は、THAT-節で結果を表します。SO THAT-節は決して主節の前にはきません。
It was rain so that I went to home.
Because it was rain, I went to home.
I am am unemployed so that I cannot afford such an expensive dress.
SO THAT-節 は目的を表す事もあります。
She studied hard so that she would be a doctor.
She studied hard to be a doctor.
I will send you a map so that you won't get lost.
結果か目的かは、内容から把握します。
SO (SUCH)…THAT-節
SO (SUCH)... THAT-節は、SO THAT-節 同様、結果を表します。「とても…なので、〜だ。」という意味です。
She studied so hard that she became a doctor.
It was such terrible weather that I did not go out.
この構文は書き換え問題で頻出です。SO の後は形容詞、SUCHの後は形容詞+名詞な点に注意しましょう。 詳しくは、形容詞＋THAT-節をご覧下さい。
It was so nice that I went out.
= It was such nice weather that I went out.
The cake was so good that I had another one.
= It was such a nice cake that I had another one.
