AT, ON and IN
場所を示す前置詞の代表格、【AT】【IN】【ON】 。狭い所から広いところ以上の的確な「感覚」を身につけましょう。
AT
【AT】は、「点」となる場所、転じて特定の場所を表す時に使います。
Empire State Building is located at 350 5th Avenue.
She is waiting for you at the corner of the street.
She sits at the desk.
They arrived late at the airport.
特定の場所を示す時に使われる【AT】は、「家」や「仕事場」「学校」などに使われる事が多いです。
at home, at work, at school, at university, at college
I will be at home by midnight.
She was still at work when I got home.
市役所、図書館、郵便局等の公共の場所で職員として働く場合は【AT】を用いる事が多いです。
He works at the post office. 郵便局で働いている
He is in the post office. 郵便局の建物の中にいる
a company, a restaurant, a store 等の場合、人によって【AT】を使ったり【IN】を使ったり様々です。
I used to worked at a store when I was in Japan.
I often feel sympathy for people who worked in stores.
ON
【ON】はある表面上を示す時に使います。
Empire State Building is located on 5th Avenue.
He lives on the streets.
She interviewed with some people on the street.
表面はなにも水平な地表だけではなく「壁」や「天井」などなど、色々あります。
There was a picture on the wall.
She tried to hang up the lamp on the ceiling.
Her photo is on page 5.
Hang your coat on that hook.
IN
【IN】はある空間や面の中を示す時に使います。
I know only a few countries in Africa.
Empire State Building is in New York.
The children were playing in the street.
She is in the kitchen.
【IN】は空間のイメージを持つため、すっぽり収まって入っている感覚があります。
She was lying in bed.
She was sitting in an chair.
He gets in the car.
建物の場合、場所として捉えた場合、【AT】 を使い、空間「建物の中」として捉えた場合【AT】を使います。
Can we see at the theater at 6 p.m? 劇場（映画館）で待ち合わせ

AT, ON and INの使い分け
【AT】【IN】【ON】の使い分けは時にはネイティブも「何でだろう。」と首をかしげることも多いです。それだけ感覚的に使っているものなんですね。
In the street? On the street?
"in the street" か、"on the street" か、迷う所ですね。
一般的には、"on the street" はアメリカ英語で、"in the street" がイギリス英語と言われていますが、英語フォーラムなどを見ると"street"自体がイギリス英語ではあまり使わないようです。
アメリカ英語では、「道で会った」などは、"on the street" が一般的。"in the street" は、車道を意味することがありますが、厳密に使い分けられている訳ではありません。どちらかというと、「ニュアンス」によって、【IN】【ON】どちらでも良いことも多いです。
I saw a couple arguing on the street. 「道で喧嘩していた」
I saw a couple arguing in the street.「道なかで喧嘩していた」
日本語でも「道で喧嘩」なのと「道なかで喧嘩」していたのと、意味が変わらないように、英語でもそれほど代わりはなく【ON】の持つニュアンスと【IN】の持つニュアンスの違いが表れている程度になります。
アメリカ英語では一般的には【ON】だけれど、【IN】を使っても間違いではない。そんな感じで押さえておけば良いところです。
On a chair? In a chair
「いすに座る」は、通常 "Sit in a chair" を使います。ただし、"couch" は "sit on a couch"
"sit in a couch" だと、クッションの下に潜り込んで入り込んだような奇妙なイメージが浮かびます。
On website? In website?
I read about it in the paper.
Please read updates on the white board.
I heard about it on BBC news.
英語では「新聞（本）で」読んだのか、「テレビで」知ったのか、前置詞を使い分けます。「開いて中を見るもの」にある情報を探すのか、表面にあるものから知るのか、そのイメージの差です。
website となると、どちらかというと「テレビ」の延長上に考えて、【ON】を使うのが一般的です。けれども「出版物」的に捉えて【IN】を使うこともあります。
