BOTH と EITHER, NEITHER の使い方
BOTH と EITHER
BOTH は「両方」、EITHER は「片方」の意味で、２つの物を表す時に使います。BOTH は、複数扱い、EITHER、EITHER は、単数形扱いです。
I always listen to both sides of the story. （複数形）
You should take either side. （単数形）
BOTH は、both A and B、EITHER は、either A or B の形で良く使われます。
You can have both ice cream and chocolate.
You can have either ice cream or chocolate.
BOTH、EITEHR 共に、代名詞として用いる事ができます。
I saw Wicked and Lion King. I liked both.
Would you like coffee or tea? −Either is fine.
代名詞の BOTH は、同格的に使う事が多くあります。主語の同格の場合一般動詞の前かBe動詞の後に、目的格の場合直後に置きます。
I saw Wicked and Lion King. I liked them both.
We were both tired.
We both bought an iPod yesterday.
We have both seen the movie.
特定の物の「〜の両方」「〜の片方」を表す時は、OF を使って表します。BOTH の後の OF は、代名詞が続いている場合を除いて、省略可能です。
Both of the books are interesting.
Both the books are interesting.
Can both of you come to my office?
× Can both you come to my office?
Can either (one) of you lend me some money?
I want to see either of those movies.
BOTH, EITHER は、否定文になった時に注意が必要です。詳しくは部分否定·全否定をご覧下さい。
NEITHER
NEITHER は、NOT EITHER の意味で、「両方とも〜ない」の意味で全否定になります。NEITHERは２つ、NONE は、３つ以上のものに使います。単数扱いが基本です。複数扱いは、informal として扱われます。
Neither of my parents is at home now.
None of my pens works properly!
I have never been to China, and my sister neither.
NEITHER は、NEITHER A NOR B の形で使われる事が多いです。
Neither my sister nor I have been to China.
Neither this PC nor that Mac actually works.
I like neither swimming nor running.
I don't like either swimming or running.
EITHER, NEITHER は、接続詞として用いられる事もあります（conjunctions参照）。
