関係副詞 - Relative Adverbs
関係副詞とは、場所・時間を修飾する際に使う関係詞、【WHERE】【WHEN】のことを言います。会話では関係詞【WHERE】【WHEN】を省略するのが一般的です。
関係副詞には、この他に【WHY】【HOW】があります。【WHY】【HOW】は形容詞節ではなく名詞節として機能することが多いです。
節の見分け方は別の項で詳しく説明します。ここでは、【WHERE】【WHEN】【WHY】【HOW】の使い方をみてみましょう。
WHERE
場所を修飾する時は、【WHERE】を使います。
The city is very beautiful. I grew up there.
→The city where I grew up is very beautiful.
【WHERE】 は前置詞を伴いませんが、【WHICH】や【THAT】が場所を表す時は前置詞を必ず使います。【WHERE】はTHEREという副詞の代わりを果たすのに対して、【WHICH】や【THAT】は名詞だけしか受けないからです。
The box is very old. I hid the key there (in the box).
→The box where I hid the key is very old.
→The box in which I hid the key is very old.
→The box that I hid the key in is very old.
→The box I hid the key in is very old. (common)
THERE の代わりを果たすのが、【WHERE】の役割。ですから、修飾される名詞（先行詞）が場所を表す名詞であっても【WHERE】が使えない場合があります。
I use to live in New York. It is one of the most attractive cities.
→I used to live in New York, which is one of the most attractive cities.
× I used to live in New York where is one of the most attractive cities.
例文の場合、形容詞節の文はITという代名詞の代わりを果たさなければいけませんから、この場合、関係代名詞の【WHICH】や【THAT】を使います。 どちらを使うか混乱した場合は、２つの文をキチンと作ってみましょう。
WHEN
時間を修飾する時は【WHEN】を使います。時を表す場合WHEN-節は THENという副詞の代わりを果たしています。
I imagine a time. Cars and trucks did not have air conditioning then.
→ I magine a time when cars and trucks did not have air conditioning.
時間を表す名詞を受ける【WHICH】は前置詞を必要として、【THAT】の場合は前置詞不要です。何故でしょうかねぇ。ここが英語の摩訶不思議なところ。
I will never forget the day. I came to NY then (on that day).
→I will never forget the day when I came to NY.
→I will never forget the day on which I came to NY.
→I will never forget the day that I came to NY.
→I will never forget the day I came to NY. (common)
× I will never forget the day which I came to NY.
